Traditional Christmas dessert (healthy!): Baked apples with walnuts

It’s a true Christmas classic: a hot, soft, sweet apple, straight from the oven! Add walnuts and cinnamon, and the result will be impossible and healthier.

The impossible bonus to this recipe will be the vanilla ice cream. Or, constantly, even during the holiday season, avoid extra sugars, serve Greek yogurt instead of ice cream.

In this dessert, hot and cold come together, and sour and sweet, and of course the opposites make up perfectly. This is the case with this recipe!

Required (for 4 people):
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 large apples
  • About 60 g of chopped walnuts + two tablespoons of chopped walnuts to sprinkle (if desired, nuts can be replaced with other nuts
  • 4 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons of milk
  • Chopped nuts as desired (grapes, dates, apricots, you can ignore them)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • crushed lemon and lemon rings (optional)
  • 4 tablespoons vanilla ice cream (optional: 4 tablespoons whipped cream or 4 tablespoons Greek yogurt)
  1. Turn the oven to 200 degrees.
  2. Wash the apples, cut off the top and cut in half on the bottom.
  3. Bring the milk to a boil, then let the sugar melt. Turn off and add the chopped walnuts.
  4. Mix the spices (cinnamon, lemon zest), chopped walnuts (or other nuts) and ground nuts with ground walnuts and mix everything. If you want, you can add a little oatmeal. Fill the bottom of the apple with this mixture, then place a tablespoon of butter in each piece. Fold the apples with the chopped top and place in a small skillet covered with baking paper. If desired, you can arrange lemon slices around the apple.
  5. Bake at 200 degrees for about 30 minutes, until the apples are completely soft and fragrant.
  6. Serve with honey, ice cream, sweet sour cream or Greek yogurt.
