Why are new energy labels for appliances important?

new energy labels

New energy labels are the best guide to choosing appliances. These make it much easier to choose an energy-efficient device, and such devices save money and protect the environment. To clarify any doubts, we turned to an expert, Bernard Gindroz.

Bernard Gindroz is the project leader EU product label for energy and ecodesign. It’s part of an energy efficiency campaign Turn greenPromoted by the Ministry of Mining and Energy of the Republic of Serbia and the European Union.

Why is it important, from a customer perspective, to choose the one that is most energy efficient when buying an electronic device?

It is important for all of us to be aware of the benefits of energy-efficient products. The high energy class of appliances consumes half the energy in operation / use. Saving energy means saving money. While high-performance products can be more expensive than low-efficiency products, it’s important to think long-term about how much energy we’ll save over the life of our device. So you pay a little more when you buy your device, but the investment is often paid for during the usage period. And this is especially important when the price of energy is rising, and / or when we are facing an energy and economic crisis.

In addition, lower energy consumption in homes can help reduce pollution and carbon dioxide emissions, which is when fossil fuels are used as an energy source.

In short, you spend less, save money, and help fight climate change.

What do the rules on ecodesign mean? Which devices comply with these rules compared to non-compliant ones?

Europe’s ecodesign regulations prohibit the introduction of energy-efficient products on the market in order to provide optimized consumption to citizens (and professionals). This means that products / devices that do not comply with the regulations will not be accepted on the market.

In addition to the ecodesign regulations, which prevent the sale of low-efficiency equipment, the energy label informs citizens of the effectiveness and main features of the products they intend to purchase. It’s a way to help consumers make a decision considering factors other than the sale price.

Why did we get new energy efficiency labels on electronic devices?

With the introduction of ecodesign regulations and the introduction of energy labels, the market share of energy-efficient devices has grown, making it necessary to change the labels to better reflect the current situation. For example, a few years ago, high-efficiency products had an A rating, while regulations have led to many products becoming more energy-efficient, switching from A to A +, then A ++, and so on. It was then concluded that adding ++++ energy labels to the scale made no sense, so it was decided to change the labels. With a good explanation from the vendors, this scaling will not cause any problems. A similar situation was resolved a few years ago in Australia, without misunderstanding and confusion.

What are the new energy labels? What do colors and symbols mean?

In general, the aim is to “green” the market, which is why it is set from red (lowest energy efficiency) to green (highest energy efficiency). There is also an indicator of average annual consumption, which helps consumers identify the difference between two products with different labels. Additional symbols vary from device to device, such as washing machine water consumption and noise levels. The aim is to provide citizens with additional information.

Is using energy-efficient devices a way to reduce electricity consumption? What do the examples of countries that use energy-efficient appliances more than Serbia show?

There is no doubt that household energy consumption accounts for a large share of the nation’s electricity consumption, and therefore the use of energy-efficient household appliances directly affects energy savings across national consumption. Examples from EU countries abound. In each country, we have data that show real, effective and significant reductions in spending. We can expect that the use of household appliances will reduce our electricity consumption more than twice, which is very important and will affect the whole energy system, such as avoiding additional electricity supply capacity due to population growth and / or additional household appliances. family … etc.

In addition, high-efficiency equipment tends to be of better quality and longer-lasting, which is a way to increase return on investment and benefits for consumers, as well as reduce the consumption of resources (materials) and waste, another positive environment. effect.
